JOHNNY ZOOM NUMBER ONE
Johnny Zoom meets Monique Marinara, a rich socialite who enlists his aid to investigate her father, Melvin Marinara. Johnny learns Mr. Marinara has recently switched religious faiths, from The Church of the King to a mysterious new religion called The Church of Checks and Balances. He also learns that Mr. Marinara had recently fired his longtime alien manservant, a member of a strange race of beings called the Garanji. Meeting with a wealthy friend named Madame Grey, Johnny is surprised when a Garanji servant has a bad fainting spell in the presence of Madame Grey. Leaving the restaurant, Johnny learns that many wealthy citizens are relieving their Garanji servants of their employment. On his way home, Johnny is followed by two thugs who try to shoot him. A fight ensues; Johnny learns that they were sent by Madame Grey. Before he can learn more, police show up, led by a suspiscious detective, and arrest Johnny. The police kill the two thugs, then charge Johnny with their murder.
JOHNNY ZOOM NUMBER TWO
Johnny Zoom is in jail. He begins a conversation with a strange man in the next cell, who apparently is also being held for a murder he didn't commit. The stranger tells Johnny how he gets a pain in his head when certain people are around. The pain returns while they are talking so the stranger goes to lie down. Monique Marinara shows up and gets Johnny out of jail, then tells Johnny to forget the whole case. When Johnny refuses, she suggests going to the Marinara Estate to show him something. Meanwhile, we meet a teenage boy who is playing with one of his father's guns. He playfully targets people out of his bedroom window without firing, one of which is Johnny talking to Monique in open plaza below. Johnny and Monique leave in her car, and once at the Marinara Estate, Johnny is surprised and subdued by guards and taken to meet Melvin Marinara, Monique's father. Melvin Marinara takes out a box which he claims to be the Church's most holy relic. He opens the box, and a strange electrical charge zaps Johnny. Johnny suddenly realizes he is no longer in control of his body. He has become part of a hive mind.
JOHNNY ZOOM NUMBER THREE
The issue opens at a large political gathering. Senator Hamilton Bisque announces the plans for an upcoming International summit between United Planets President Robert Smidgeon and the emperor of an alien race called the Crudites. Fielding questions on security, he reveals that he in charge of all security for the event. As steps off the dias after the speech, he is greeted by Melvin Marinara, who is an old friend of his. Taking Senator Bisque aside, Mr. Marinara shows him his strange box and uses it to steal his mind. Elsewhere, Madame Grey is shown with a similar box, stealing the mind of another wealthy socialite. And in yet another location, we meet General Blustergast, who is being visited by our hero, Johnny. After congratuling the General for his role in the upcoming summit, Johnny pulls out a box like Melvin Marinara's and proceeds to steal the general's mind. Johnny's real consciousness watches the event take place, but can do nothing to regain control of his body. It has been weeks since Johnny was absorbed by the hive mind. At first, Johnny was lost in a sea of a million different minds, but then his mind began to sort out the information and Johnny was able to navigate through the different conscuiousnesses. He began searching for a way to break free. Finally he comes in contact with Monique, who is also part of the hive mind, and is able to speak to her mind when their bodies are near. They realize that they must give in to the most powerful emotions they can experience, and induce thier bodies to make love. The hive mind is overwhelmed by the powerful feelings, and while it is distracted, Johnny and Monique are able to break free and regain control of thier bodies. Now in control of their physical forms, they realize that an alarm has been sounded, and they are trapped at the Marinara Estate. They are going to have to fight their way out.
JOHNNY ZOOM NUMBER FOUR
Johnny and Monique are trapped in the Marinara Estate. With guards stalking them at every turn, they manage to make their way to the parking garage, where they can get a car and escape. As they are entering the vehicle, Melvin Marinara appears at the door with 2 guards and orders Johnny Zoom to be killed. Johnny throws a stun grenade that he was able to grab off a fallen guard and subdues them. In the explosion, Melvin Marinara is injured and falls down unconscious. Johnny runs over and grabs the injured man and carries him into the car with he and Monique. They manage to fly out the garage door as more guards enter the garage and start firing after them. Once free of the Marinara estate, Johnny fastens a bandage for Melvin Narinara's heavily bleeding injury. They take him to a hospital where he is pronounced to be in stable condition, but needs blood transfusions to accomodate the extreme blood loss. Leaving Monique at the hospital with her father, Johnny goes out to try to find the answers to some of the questions he has about this case. He returns to the jail where he was interred in the second issue. He creates a diversion and is able to get to the cell of the strange man he spoke to through the bars in issue 2. Johnny wants to help the stranger escape, but they realize they both are going to be cornered by the jail guards. The stranger reveals he has been able able to free some of the bricks in the jail wall, making an opening large enough to escape through. They crawl through this opening and up crawling through the sewers, which run for miles deep below the city. Soon, they try to find a way up to surface, and as they are trying to open a door to a vertical shaft, they are beset upon by hundreds of giant sewer bugs. Johnny fights off the bugs with his blaster and his fists while the stranger works at opening the door to the upwards shaft, which hasn't been opened in many years. Finally, the door starts to give, and the stranger is able to get it open. The shaft is full of water which pours down out of the shaft with incredible force, knocking both men to the ground and washing away most of the sewer bugs. Their ranks broken, the rest of the bugs retreat, and Johnny and the stranger are able to crawl upwards through the shaft, and soon make it to the surface. A short time later, Johnny reappears at the hospital where Monique waits with her father, and asks the doctor not to use human blood in Mr. Marinara's next blood transfusion. He asks the doctor use Garanji blood instead.
