Food Chain was formed in 1992 in an attic
in the Andersenville neighborhood of Chicago, and began playing shows around the Midwest, including making regular appearances at the now defunct Avalon Niteclub on Belmont Ave. In 1993, the band moved to a giant loft just south of the Loop and over the next several years, hosted huge parties with a ton of local bands. In 1995, they released the CD Live At The Loft, including the songs "BMW" and "Skinny Dog." Their music has been compared to such diverse artists as Frank Zappa, The Dead Kennedys and King Crimson.Excerpt from a 1995 Press Sheet:
FOOD CHAIN has a three year history to date. After playing a few shows in 1993, Food Chain emerged as a monster in 1994, with shows at the late Avalon Niteclub, Sweet Alice, Czar Bar, Lucky's and Bedrock's. Response became increasingly enthusiastic as Food Chain moved towards summer, with shows at Gambler's, Phyllis' and a return visit to the Avalon Niteclub, which included 45 minutes of video to their already outrageous sound and stage show. Summer found them playing at such clubs as Brixie's, The Interaction Lounge, The Beat Kitchen, Cue Club, and road shows at LaVilla (Streator IL), Chamber (Madison Wl), and the Bluebird Lounge (Bloomington, IN), leaving behind a trail of bewildered and energized humans. Summer ended with Freefest '94 with Food Chain appearing on Sunday at this local 3-day festival. 1994 ended with return visits to several clubs and the release of the JM Productions CD "Wrong Side of the Tracks", featuring Food Chain's song "Dankeschon" 1995 has been a busy year with several visits to clubs such as the Bop Shop, Dugan's, Spice Factory Loft, and road shows at University of Michigan, Rick's American Cafe (East Lansing Ml), and a beachfront show in Muskegon Ml sponsored by Big Bob's Beach Rentals. Festival appearances included FreeFest'95 and the Around the Coyote Festival in Wicker Park A live show at the Spice Factory Loft was recorded on July 22, and has become Food Chain's first CD, "Live at the Loft", to be released Nov 17th.
Food Chain's last show was in 2005. The boys reformed and did two gigs that year--one a Cloudland Studios Festival, and the other a benefit for Mrs. Tony Long in the Chicago suburbs. All the members still maintain a friendship to this day, so you never know... could there be another Food Chain show in the future? Only time will tell.
