The material in this issue of The Smudge was originally published in a printed edition in December 1981. The Smudge, Volume 2, No. 1, was sold at Bay City Central High School when Randal Huiskens and the rest of the staff were about 16 years old. That first mass produced issue was not without controversy, and publication of future issues was thrown into question because of the adult subject matter and offensive references. Anyone who has the a copy of the actual printed issue will notice that two of the features of the original publication have been replaced.

The original publication featured a story entitled "To Hell With The Japs." Upon review of the material for this online version, it was decided to replace that story with a story from an earlier "hand-to-hand" version of The Smudge (Vol. 1, No. 319), "Geometry Hurts." While the original story was not highly offensive, we felt it may cross the line of today's PC world in regard to racial stereotypes. Another casualty of political correctness was the cartoon, "The Adventures of Super-Pimp," which has been replaced with the less offensive "Early One Afternnon At Dewey's Pub," a post-Smudge cartoon from the mid-nineties.

Everything else has been faithfully restored and reproduced here for your reading pleasure, with slight tweaks to the content where necessary for online presentation versus printed publication. We hope you enjoy this first online issue of The Smudge, and look forward to restoring and reproducing here all subsequent surviving issues!
